Region H Conference 2014 Recap
I can’t believe it’s been a little over a month since over 700 SWE members were at Michigan Technological University for the Region H Conference. Thank you to Michigan Tech SWE for a great program!
At registration on Friday, we were given our SWE swag. In the evening, there was plenty to do from skiing down Mount Ripley and touring the ice sculptures to visiting downtown Houghton for Ladies Night.
The conference opened on Saturday with the University Welcome by Bonnie Gorman, Dean of Students and Associate Vice President, Michigan Technological University. After that we heard from our first keynote speaker Patricia Poppe, Vice President of Customer Experience and Operations for Consumers Energy. Patricia told us to be open to opportunity, be brave, and choose love. Then, we were given the State of SWE address from SWE Society President Stacey DelVecchio. Stacey also presented our Region H Governor Jenny Morikawa with the SWE Spirit Stick for our region spirit at the Annual WE13 Conference in Baltimore. In the afternoon, there were multiple sessions that you could attend from SWE Professional and Collegiate meetings to dog sledding. The evening concluded with the SWE Banquet. At the banquet, we heard from our second keynote speaker Martha Sullivan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sensata Technologies. Martha’s advice to us was the following, “Don’t wait to exert your ideas until you’re confident. You won’t be fully prepared. Step up! Give it a go.” She also advised us to seize the opportunity, try leadership positions, and make mistakes and learn from them.
Once again, thank you to Michigan Tech SWE for a successful SWE conference! Congratulations to Notre Dame for winning the bid for the FY15 Region H Conference!
