On April 26th, SWE at the University of Illinois at Chicago conducted an outreach event titled Mom, Me, and SWE in which 5th and 6th grade girls from local elementary schools were invited to UIC to participate in some fun but academically stimulating activities with their mothers! The event was held in the morning beginning around 10 AM, and involved a short presentation as well as some science activities such as creating slime and building a catapult out of a wide variety of materials. The catapults were then tested through a fun competition and the winners received prizes that encouraged creative problem solving and analytical thinking. About eight girls and their mothers participated in this event that was a first for our chapter. Here is a short video of the event compiled by UIC SWE’s advisor, Elsa Soto.
