Top Secret Rosies
To celebrate 2015 Engineers Week, our section screened a showing of the documentary Top Secret Rosies: The Female Computers of World War II. This documentary tells the story of female mathematicians who contributed to the WWII war effort by acting as human computers for ballistics calculations. Some of these women later went on to program one of the very first computers, ENIAC. The SWE Conference 2013 magazine had an article about this documentary. The film came highly recommended by several other SWE sections and we could see why! It shed light on a little known chapter of the history of women in STEM.
In January our section held a book club featuring the newly released book by Tara Mohr, Playing Big. Mohr, a conference speaker on women’s leadership, highlights different ways women are “playing small” in their lives and careers and suggests ways for them to “play bigger.” Even though a small percentage of the meeting attendees had actually finished reading the book, we had a lively and open discussion about topics raised in the book: leadership styles, risk taking, and what obstacles women encounter in their careers. This event was so popular we are planning on making a book group meeting an annual event!
